The magnitude 9.0 quake struck about 7 a.m. Sunday (7 p.m. ET Saturday) and was centered about 100 miles (160 km) off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island at a depth of about 6.2 miles (10 km). Phuket Update - Phuket Island and the surrounding coastal areas, including Krabi, Phi Phi and Khao Lak were exposed to the Tsunami which hit on the morning of December 26th. There was extensive damage to beachfront hotels and sadly many casualties. Power, water, Telephone/ Internet and the complete infrastructure are functioning as normal and the cleanup operation is in progress. Kata and Karon Beach sustained relatively light damage and the first tourists are back at the beaches. In Patong the damage was greater so repairs and clean up will take longer.
